When the groom first arrives at the bride’s house for the wedding, the women and young girls of the bride’s family welcome him with a series of playful questions—this custom is called Parichhan. In earlier times, when marriages were arranged without the couple seeing each other, these questions served to test the groom’s intelligence, presence of mind, and conversational skills. In this song, the women invite their friends to join the Parichhan and, while describing the groom’s beauty, remark that he is gentle and handsome, with sandalwood tilak on his forehead and kohl-lined eyes that look most charming. Teasing him, they urge the groom to walk slowly so that the bride’s priceless ānchal does not tear. Song ends with the Ram-like groom laughing and praising the quick-witted women of Mithila.
