ā re gītiyā me chittiyā,
lagaole re jogiyā - 2
prīt chhoṛaune chali jāi,

ā re jakhan jamaiyā lāl,
ghar san bāhar bhel - 2
sāsu mukh paṛal udās,

ā re ehan jamaiyā lāl ke,
jāhiyo nai ditahun,
jāiyo nai ditahun,
rakhitahun hṛday lagāi ।

ā re jakhan jamaiyā lāl,
āngan san bāhar bhel - 2
sarahoji mukh paṛal udās ।

ā re ehan nanadosiyā ke,

ā re jakhan jamaiyā lāl,
āngan san bāhar bhel,

dhiyā mon paṛal udās ।

ā re ehan nirmohiyā sange,
prīto nai joṛitahun - 2
prīt chhoṛaune chali jāi ।

Song Description

In Mithila, Udaasi Geet are sung when the groom takes leave of his in-laws’ home. After the wedding the bride does not leave her parental house immediately; instead, the groom stays on for some time, spending several days with his wife’s family and forming close bonds with parents-in-law, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and other relatives. When the moment of departure arrives, hearts grow heavy, and these plaintive songs give voice to the shared sorrow and bittersweet farewell. This particular song dwells on the pain and anguish felt by every member of the family as they face the groom’s departure, and on their tender efforts to cope with it. The bride herself laments that she should never have fallen in love with this heart-breaker—for then parting would have been easier.
