Song Description
In Mithila, Badhaiya (congratulatory) songs are sung to celebrate the birth of a child. They are filled with good wishes and gentle humour. Female relatives, especially the nanad (husband’s sister) and bhabhi (brother’s wife), exchange playful banter. These songs not only express joy but also strengthen family bonds, as gifts and blessings are shared. This lively Badhaiya song begins when the nanad teasingly complains that the moment she entered her brother’s house, her bhabhi hid her bangle (kangan). The bhabhi replies with mock helplessness, saying she owns nothing—her necklace is broken, her plates cracked, her sari torn—and asks the sister-in-law to be content with the sparkle in the newborn’s eyes. The nanad, undeterred, insists that excuses won’t work: “Open your box and bring out the bangle to mark this happy day!” Through its playful call-and-response, the song captures the joy of a child’s arrival and the affectionate custom of giving a gift to the nanad when a baby is born.
