Song Description
This is a Parichhan song from the wedding traditions of Mithila. The ritual takes place when the groom enters the bride’s courtyard for the first time during the wedding. The women of the household welcome him with a Parichhan dala — a wicker plate carrying the items used for the ritual. But Parichhan is not just a welcome; it is also a playful and ceremonial way of assessing the groom’s wit, bearing, and worthiness. This song is composed by Kapildev Thakur under the pen name ‘Snehlata’. In the song, the women of the household and the bride’s friends are eager to see the new groom. They call out to one another — “O friends, the new groom has arrived! Come, let us look at him to our heart’s content.” They ask one another to perform the Parichhan quickly and bring the groom into the courtyard. The groom is described as charming and beautiful, someone who wins everyone’s heart. He wears a jewelled crown, and the auspicious tilak on his forehead shines like the moon. The women say that just as the daughter is graceful and virtuous, the groom too is handsome and worthy. It seems as though fate has created this match with care. In the end, they sing — come, let us not delay; bring the groom into the courtyard."
