Mundan is an important ritual performed after a child’s birth. On this occasion the child’s hair is cut for the first time—traditionally with scissors. The ceremony is usually held in the first, third, or fifth year of the child’s life. This song is sung during the child’s hair-cutting ceremony. When the hair is cut during the mundan, it is not allowed to fall on the ground. Instead, a woman of the family—such as the maami or chaachi—carefully gathers the hair in the end of her saree (aanchal). In the evening the hair is placed at an auspicious spot, like the base of a bamboo plant or in a river. There is an element of gentle teasing as the song playfully calls out the names of relatives one by one, inviting each to hold the child’s hair in her aanchal.
