Song Description

Mundan, the first hair-cutting ceremony, is an important ritual in Mithila where a child’s hair is cut for the first time—traditionally using scissors. Many songs are sung during this rite, but among the most significant are Pitar ke geet—songs remembering the ancestors. This song is performed in a playful call-and-response style. The singers ask which grandfather will plough the field, who will sow fenugreek and turmeric, and which grandmother will grind the paste. The names of specific grandparents are then inserted as answers. The mention of turmeric and fenugreek refers to the ubtan—a healing herbal paste applied to the freshly shaved head. These songs reflect the belief that every auspicious act should begin with the blessings of elders and forefathers.
