Lyrics

kātik mās bītal sukarātī,
karab chhaṭhik oriān ।
māi he! hamar manorath ahīn janai chhī,
karabai dukhak nidān ।
chhaṭhi maiyā! hamar manorath ahīn janai chhī।
karabai dukhak nidān ।

sabhahak dukh harai chhī he maiyā!
mahimā ahānk apār ।
hamahun kar joṛi karai chhī,
ahīn chhī jagat ādhār ।
māi he! nirdhan dīn dukhī avalā chhī,
chhī ham niःsantān ।
chhaṭhi maiyā! hamar manorath ahīn janai chhī।
karabai dukhak nidān ।

aragh lel ham ghāṭ sajaibai,
aripan sinūr piṭhār ।
ṭhakuā bhusabā pūrī piṛikiyā, kusiā ā kurabār ।
māi he! āratī ke oriān kene chhī, dhūp-dīp pakabān ।
chhaṭhi maiyā! hamar manorath ahīn janai chhī।
karabai dukhak nidān ।

ehi sansārak shakti sūry chhathi,
dūr karathi anhār ।
inakar bahin dayālu maiyā,
jag ke tāraṇahār ।
māi he! tīnū lokak kashṭ harai chhī, jag me ahīnk guṇagān ।
chhaṭhi maiyā! hamar manorath ahīn janai chhī।
karabai dukhak nidān ।
he chhaṭhi maiyā! hamar manorath ahīn janai chhī।
karabai dukhak nidān । Poet Umakant Jha Bakshi

Song Description

This is a Chhath song, sung during the festival of Chhath Puja. The four-day festival begins three days after Bhai Dooj and concludes with the main puja on Kartik Shukla Shashthi. Chhath songs give voice to women's emotions, the social realities of their lives, their pain, their hopes, and their prayers for the well-being of their families. In this song, a woman prays to Chhathi Maiya to fulfil her deepest wish. She says, "O Mother, Sukrati has passed, and I have begun my preparations for Chhath. You already know what lies in my heart. You remove the sorrows of all; please take away mine too. I am poor, humble, and burdened with grief, and my greatest pain is that I have no child." "For the arghya offering, I will decorate the river ghat, draw aripan, and perform puja with sindoor and pithar. I will offer thakua, bhusba, and other traditional sweets as prasad. Incense, lamps, and aarti, everything is ready." She prays, "The sun, Surya Dev, is the power that sustains this world and drives away darkness. You are his compassionate sister, the one who protects and nurtures all of creation. Your glory is sung across all three worlds. O Mother, remove my suffering and make my wish come true."
