Song Description

This song is a beautiful example of the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Mithila known as Gosaunik Geet. In the Mithila region, the worship of Shakti (the Divine Feminine) is very much rooted, and every household has a Gosaunik Ghar — a sacred room where the Devi is installed and worshipped. This song is sung at the beginning of any auspicious occasion to seek the blessings of the Goddess. It reflects a tender, familial bond between the devotee and the Mother, where the Goddess is regarded as the protector of the family. The song invokes the Goddess in many forms — as Shivpriya, the beloved of Shiva; as Ambike, the Mother Goddess; and as Chandike and Nishumbh-Shumbh Bhedani, the fierce destroyer of demons. Each line of the song, ending with the invocation “Mangal Karu” (Grant auspiciousness), expresses the devotee’s surrender. The Goddess is revered both as divine power, as well as the source of nature, compassion, forgiveness, and art.
