This is a contemporary Maithili lullaby composed by Kalikant Jha ‘Trishit’. In this lullaby, a mother creates a tender world of love, nature, and imagination to lull her child to sleep. She points out the moon and cajoles the child to have some milk and roti. She sings that parrots and mynas are the baby’s friends, and the pigeon coos as if joining in the conversation. Sleep arrives slowly from a magical world. It emerges from a seven-coloured realm and from ‘Bhanumati’s box of wonders’, as though seated in a palanquin carried by bearers. The spring breeze pats the child gently like an affectionate aunt, and Sleep calls out with love — “Sleep, Chunni, sleep, Muniya.” Listening to Sleep’s whispers, the child’s eyelids close and a faint smile appears on her lips. In the end, the poet blesses the child to live long, by the grace of Bholenath.
