Song Description

This song is an example of the Krishna-bhakti and shringara traditions in Maithili literature. It portrays the emotional state of a sakhi (gopi) when, after a long separation, the hope of meeting Krishna begins to awaken again. The sakhi says, “Today my happiness cannot be expressed in words. The day has finally come when my beloved, who lives in my very soul, is about to return.” Sweet melodies begin to echo within her heart, and dormant hopes awaken. Nature, too, seems to take part in this emotion. The blue sky seems to pour down nectar, while the sound of the Yamuna, the moonlight, and the melody of Krishna’s flute bring the whole atmosphere alive. In the pain of separation, she prays to Murari to free her from this web of longing. Even the cool breeze feels scorching to her in this pain of separation. The wait is almost over and the moment of love is near. The sakhi wonders how her very soul can remain still within her in such overwhelming joy. Shyam’s beauty is like a newly risen moon, and it is impossible to escape the arrows of his gaze. Clad in yellow garments, adorned with earrings, and glowing with a gentle smile, his beauty captivates her so deeply that she cannot take her eyes off him. And yet, in this very longing, she calls out, “O Kanhaiya, where are you hiding?”
