Song Description
Mundan is an important ritual performed after a child’s birth. On this occasion the child’s hair is cut for the first time—traditionally with scissors. The ceremony is usually held in the first, third, or fifth year of the child’s life. This song is sung while the child’s hair is being cut. The barber is asked to trim the hair gently, while the dancer (nat) is urged to move gracefully. Someone is busy grinding sandalwood paste; someone else is preparing the ceremonial dhoti. There is sweet, affectionate teasing in the song, with jokes on maami, naani, and daadi. It also paints a lively scene of relatives arriving from afar, women fixing their hair and applying kajal to their eyes.
