Celebrated on the luminous night of Sharad Purnima, Kojagara is among Mithila’s most cherished festivals. As the full moon shines bright, Goddess Lakshmi is believed to descend to earth asking, “Ko jagra?”—“Who is awake?” Those awake receive her blessings of prosperity.
In Mithila, Kojagara holds special meaning for newlyweds. Gifts of makhana, sweets, curd, and new clothes are sent to the groom’s home, elders perform chumaan and bless the groom, and families spend the evening playing pachisi amidst joyful banter and celebration.
