Jhijhiya is a traditional lamp-dance performed during the days of Durga Puja in the month of Ashwin. Sung by women and young girls from marginalized communities, these songs are believed to protect the village from harmful forces. Women light lamps inside perforated clay pots, balance them on their heads, and circle the entire village, while other women follow behind singing. The flickering light, the rhythm of the collective dance, and the prayers for the Goddess’s protection together create a unique experience.
